Fighting for clean, safe water and accountability in Benton Harbor.

Since at least 2018, the people of Benton Harbor have been exposed to dangerous levels of lead and other contaminants through its drinking water. These levels exceeded the legal limits under the state and national Safe Drinking Water Acts, and Benton Harbor is the only city in Michigan to have six straight monitoring periods in which lead levels exceeded the amount in which water systems are required to take action.

Instead of notifying the community about the water contamination and its serious risks to public health, those responsible for Benton Harbor’s water systems — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, the State of Michigan, the City of Benton Harbor, and others — hid the severity of the health crisis and waited three years until October 2021 to alert residents. As a result, many Benton Harbor residents are now facing severe health effects.

This community deserves justice, and those responsible for exposing Benton Harbor residents to lead and other poisons must be held accountable. The human right to clean, safe water must be restored for this environmental justice community.
